About Taberna
Taberna is one of New Bern's premier golf communities and boasts a stunning championship 18-hole golf course created by Senior Jack Nicklaus and Designer Jim Lipe. A popular subdivision, Taberna is located directly off of Highway 70 and is just minutes away from the Craven County Regional Airport. A unique community, Taberna celebrates New Bern's history of being a sister city to Bern, Switzerland. The name of "Taberna" literally means "place of hospitality" and was the original name of Bern, Switzerland. Throughout the neighborhood, you will also notice all the street names are all charmingly named after Swiss towns.
The clubhouse for Taberna also has an interesting Swiss connection, as it was designed after the Swiss castle of Nydegg, built in the 12th century by Duke Berchtold V.von Zähringen Unfortunately, the castle itself was destroyed by the Bern people in 1268, even though it was part of the city's defenses. Taberna is also known for its active lifestyle opportunities, boasting over 2.5 miles of paved jogging trails, tennis courts and junior olympic size pool in addition to golfing, canoes with lake access, community park with picnic area, athletic fields, and borders the Croatan National Forest.
At the entrance from Highway 70 to this neighborhood, a stunning scene awaits you. Beautiful wrought iron gates on either side of the street, proudly displaying the Taberna name greet you. An elegant, long median in the middle features lovely flowering trees and is well-landscaped. Attractive, Charles Dickens type, black streetlights are found throughout the community. Hanging from these streetlights are flags displaying the Taberna coat of arms. As this community has over 1,100 acres and 700-800 homes, Taberna has its own intersection off of Highway 70, complete with stoplight. Due to the size of the community and the amount of homes, Taberna is actually comprised of several sub-communities within it.
Taberna Village
Taberna Village is located on Neuchatel Road, and features elegant traditional style homes with both brick and vinyl exteriors. A large sub-community of Taberna, it is made up of several streets and a few cul-de-sacs. As with all of Taberna, landscaping in this section is lush and well-kept. Many homes feature spacious lots with wide back decks or screened in back porches. Several of the jogging trails run through here, and Taberna Village is near the stunning clubhouse. A lot of these homes also have garages and are mostly two stories.
Abbington Woods at Taberna Village
The Abbington Woods sub-subdivision is connected to the Taberna Village community, and it is comprised of just a few streets making it quite intimate. Charming, traditional style homes mostly have vinyl exteriors,and are situated on heavily, wooded lots. Wide, back decks or screened in porches are also prevalent here, and most homes also offer garages.
One Taberna Way
Across the street from Taberna Village, is the intimate sub-community of One Taberna Way, which consists of just one street ending in a cul-de-sac. One Taberna Way only has eight two units building in total which makes it rather exclusive. Beautiful, attached two unit townhomes are featured in the traditional style and are constructed of white brick. Very elegant, each two-unit building shares a lavishly landscaped courtyard and all the townhomes have fabulous views of the links from the back, easily viewable from the screened in back decks. All homes also feature a double car garage with bonus rooms over them. In front of One Taberna Way, are sidewalks where joggers running with their dogs or moms enjoying the afternoon pushing a stroller can be found. Quite an active community, the clubhouse is located just down the street, as well, and features tennis courts and junior-olympic size pool in addition to golfing.
