General Information |

The historic neighborhood of Ghent is located near the downtown of New Bern, and it is not far from Highway 70. This community is surrounded by the Trolley Run, Colonial Heights, and Degraffenried Park subdivisions, and it is within walking distance of the YMCA. Homes in this lovely neighborhood were mostly built between 1912-World War II era. Several homes were built in later years (between 1980's - 2001) on the west side, when the area underwent a revitalization. Of the three historic districts, Ghent is the newest one.
Ghent was started as a trolley suburb, with the trolley line running from one end of town to the other. It was operated by the New Bern-Ghent Railway Company between the years of 1913-1929. This neighborhood gets its unusual name from that very railway company. Today, in place of the trolley tracks down the middle of the neighborhood, there is a lovely median landscaped with beautiful, decorative trees.
A fairly large subdivision, Ghent consists of three streets (Spencer Avenue, Rhem Avenue, and the north side of Park Avenue) and encompasses fourteen city blocks. Many of this subdivision's homes features colonial revival and craftman style bungalows/houses. Homes may also have wide front porches, decorative front columns, and private balconies. This community also features mature pecan and oak trees with lush landscaping gracing narrow lots. Homes on these lots are situated deep, rather than wide, as this was the style in that time period.
After World War II, the neighborhood of Ghent fell into hard times as people began to move into the surburbs and the area fell into disrepair. In later years, this beautiful, historic community has undergone a revitalization with many homes being restored to their former glories. As the area became popular again, amenities near this area also began to grow. The YMCA is within walking distance and offers wonderful activities including a swimming pool, weight room, and racquet ball court. Also close by is the Fort Totten Park featuring a baseball field. The Larson Creek Park, offering nature trails, picnic areas, boat lauches, and fishing is quite close too.
